The Mehta Boys Review

The tumulus father-son relationship at the heart of The Mehta Boys naturally leads us to expect a resolution where things improve. It’s a familiar narrative arc, but what elevates Boman Irani’s directorial debut are the unpredictable flourishes woven into the script.

That, and the performances—each one pitch-perfect.
Irani slips into the role of Shiv Mehta effortlessly, his characteristic suavity giving way to the slightly hunched shoulders of a man lost in the aftermath of his wife’s death. His portrayal of the irascible, eccentric Parsi patriarch feels deeply lived-in, an amalgam of many Shivs we’ve encountered before. This is his turf, and he thrives in it.

The screenplay, co-written by Irani and Alexander Dinelaris, captures the constant push and pull of the father-son dynamic with precision. However, at times, the film feels constricted, losing some of its natural flow—you wish certain scenes had more room to breathe.

A striking moment comes when Shiv Mehta looks out from his son’s balcony, shaking his head at all the ‘glass and steel’—a phrase that resurfaces later when his son’s journey comes full circle.

Amay Mehta (Avinash Tiwary), the son struggling to find his footing as an architect in Mumbai under the watchful eye of his mentor (Siddharth Basu), delivers yet another strong performance. His portrayal of a young man caught between ambition and uncertainty is both restrained and affecting.

Despite minor quibbles, The Mehta Boys stands out in a sea of uninspired Bollywood offerings. It delves into daddy issues with empathy, exploring what makes relationships endure and evolve. A film well worth your time.
